“Apocalypse Now” (1979) is a landmark war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness. Set during the Vietnam War, the film stars Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin Willard, who is tasked with a covert mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando. Kurtz, a once-respected officer, has gone rogue and set himself up as a god-like figure deep in the Cambodian jungle, leading a group of followers in a brutal, lawless territory.

“Apocalypse Now” is often praised for its ambitious scope, stunning cinematography, and haunting atmosphere. It is also notable for its depiction of the psychological toll of war, as well as its exploration of themes such as imperialism, insanity, and the thin line between civilization and savagery. The film’s iconic sequences, such as the helicopter attack scored to Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” and Brando’s chilling monologues as Kurtz, have cemented its status as one of the greatest films of all time.

How 'Apocalypse Now' became a behind-the-scenes warzone

Despite its success, the production of Apocalypse Now was notoriously difficult. Coppola faced numerous challenges, including budget overruns, script changes, harsh filming conditions in the Philippines, and tensions with the cast, particularly with Marlon Brando. The making of the film became almost as legendary as the movie itself, documented in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.
